BIFF CLEARLY DIDN’T GET HIS WAY WHEN he called Jack because he was a pouty mess as he followed Sully, Ofelia, and Pascal onto the Adelaide. He murmured to his men, keeping a safe distance, but chased the trio inside when they disappeared through the door.

“I want my complaints lodged on record,” he announced to Sully as Pascal moved to the far side of the room and dropped his cowl. “I don’t appreciate being forced to work with a vampire.”

Sully glared at him, annoyed by the man’s rudeness. “I don’t care if you like it or not. Shut up.”

“It’s fine.” Pascal waved off Sully’s obvious discomfort. “I’m so old I no longer get my feelings hurt. If he’s upset, he’s allowed to be upset.”

“Thanks so much for your permission,” Biff snapped.

“His name is Biff,” Ofelia explained to Pascal. “He was always going to be obnoxious in life. It’s like his parents didn’t even want to give him a chance.”

Pascal’s lips quirked. “I have your love, my dear.” He beamed at his favorite witch. “That’s all that matters.”

“This is unbelievable,” Biff muttered under his breath.

“What it is is…wrong,” Pascal countered, his speculative gaze moving to the chandelier. He was dumbfounded by the state of the room. “Why is there no mold?”

Ofelia’s eyes went wide. “That was one of my first questions.”

“It should be impossible.” Pascal ran his fingers over the wooden banister that separated the entryway from the rest of the room. “This was a dining car, correct?”

Ofelia glanced around, uncertain. “I don’t know. I don’t see any tables.”

“If they were getting close to the end of their destination, they would’ve packed the tables away.”

“Why?”

“Because space was at a premium on a boat like this. A steamboat is not like the Titanic. The tables didn’t always last for the duration of the trip. They were also cheap, and easily chopped up for wood to fuel the fires beneath. Have you been down there?”

“To the engine room?” Sully queried, his nose wrinkled. “No. We hit the captain’s quarters first.”

“Hmm.” Pascal was thoughtful as he turned in a circle. “This is different from any other steamboat I ever traveled on. The design is…very off.”

“You traveled on steamboats?” Biff queried. He seemed suddenly interested in the conversation. “Why? Can’t you just fly?”

“Actually, I can.” Pascal lobbed an easy smile toward the security chief. “What I can’t do is fly over long distances. I can only do short bursts. I’m not Superman.”

“Then just turn into a bat,” Biff suggested. “That seems like the easiest answer to me.”

“Just turn into a bat?” Pascal’s expression didn’t change, but Ofelia could feel the amusement vibrating from him.

“You need to watch fewer bad movies,” Ofelia offered, lightly patting Biff’s shoulder before cutting around him so she could study an oddly colored patch on the wall. “It looks like there was a painting here at one time.”

“It does,” Pascal confirmed. He focused his full attention on her now. “There was normally art in the dining room. There’s no art presently on display in here though.
